Did you know that San Diego State University had it’s beginnings in University Heights? The San Diego Normal School was built in 1898 on Normal Street in University Heights to increase the certification of teachers. The school moved to Montezuma Mesa in 1931 and was renamed San Diego State University in the early 1970s.

The University Heights Heights Historical Society has developed this online, self-guided walking tour that highlights the 122-year history of the Normal School site and the eight historic buildings that still remain. Several potential heritage trees are also included on the tour. The tour is optimized for mobile devices and so is viewable on your smart phone.

This 11-acre site is of special importance to our community right now as the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) seeks to redevelop the entire site to include affordable housing for SDUSD teachers and staff. For more information, click here.

Enjoy the tour and please consider a donation to the University Heights Historical Society to support our work. Thank you!
